Grant Information

The Barakat Trust is open to applicants worldwide in the fields of the history of the art and architecture, and the archaeology, of Islamic societies before 1900CE. Support is given for a diverse range of projects, programmes and studies, including:

  • Barakat Senior Scholarships to enable an established Muslim scholar from the Islamic world to come to the U.K. for three months to carry out a specific programme of research.
  • Barakat Postdoctoral Scholarships to enable a Muslim post-doctoral scholar to spend nine months (October–June) in Oxford to carry out a specific programme of research or to prepare such research for publication.
  • Barakat Graduate Studentships for a Muslim student already accepted by the Faculty of Oriental Studies of the University of Oxford to read for an M.St or M.Phil in Islamic Art and Archaeology.
  • Barakat International Studentships to support a Muslim student from the Islamic world who have already been accepted on an approved taught graduate course
  • Barakat Doctoral Student Grants and Postdoctoral Scholar Grants for students and early career scholars, to assist with the costs of travel for fieldwork and study, attending conferences, and participating in educational and/or training programmes (excluding university fees and maintenance costs for doctoral students).
  • Barakat Major Awards for established scholars attached to research institutions, for archaeological fieldwork, research (including travel, educational and/or training programmes), and other projects including colloquia and conferences relating to the study of the history of the material and visual culture of Muslim societies.
  • Barakat Conservation Awards towards a conservation project or the training of a conservator.
  • Barakat Publication Grants towards the costs of a major publication on Islamic art, architecture, archaeology etc.
  • Barakat Digitisation Grants towards the costs of making available online any major collection of Islamic art, architecture and archaeology.

Research grants at post-doctoral level are intended principally to help overseas scholars conduct research at the University of Oxford or elsewhere in the U.K. No scholarship or grant is offered for more than one year at a time, and no guarantee of renewal can be given.

The Barakat Trust does not support the applied arts.
