Eligibility

Applicants for scholarships and academic research must have completed at least a B.A. degree. Research students must be established in their course of study, and in a position to provide an assessment from a current academic supervisor. Those applying for post-doctoral awards must have completed a doctoral degree.

Most of the funds available are derived from zakāt contributions, and can be granted only to Muslim applicants, to enable them to carry out, in person, particular tasks, projects or courses of study. A smaller amount derived from ṣadaqat al-jāriya may be available in any given year to support non-Muslim scholars and projects administered by non-Muslim organizations.

In some cases, such as archaeological excavations, exhibitions and conferences, both zakāt and non-zakat funds can be used for different purposes. For example, a non-Muslim applicant may apply for both

zakāt funds

  • for the employment, travel and maintenance of Muslims participating in archaeological fieldwork
  • for the employment of Muslims to carry out any particular task connected with an exhibition or conference, including associated educational programmes
  • for the travel expenses and maintenance of Muslim participants at colloquia and conferences

and

ṣadaqat al-jāriya funds

Applicants should bear in mind that, in any given year, the sums available from ṣadaqat al-jāriya tend to be both strictly limited and much in demand.

  • for his or her own travel expenses and maintenance, and for those of other non-Muslim team members
  • for equipment and other consumables
  • for other expenses such as the hire of equipment, vehicles, etc.
