The Barakat Trust is a UK registered charity which provides financial support for the study of, and for research into, the history of the material and visual cultures of Islamic societies. Established in 1987, The Barakat Trust operates exclusively for educational purposes, providing scholarships and research grants for the history of the art, architecture and material cultures of Islamic societies at some of the world's most respected academic and cultural institutions at the post-graduate and post-doctoral level. Exhibitions, lectures, conferences, archaeological excavations, conservation projects and training, surveys and documentation, travel grants and scholarly publications are also supported. This assistance is granted to enable scholars to add to the body of scholarship about Muslim societies, while enhancing the possibilities of cross-cultural understanding and tolerance.

Applications are considered once a year, in the spring, by the Academic Advisory Committee, and each application is considered on its own merit.  To qualify for support, proposed projects must demonstrate that they will make a genuine and useful contribution to the field, and be consistent with the Barakat Trust's overall aims.

Since its inception, The Barakat Trust has supported projects, students and scholars -- each has contributed in various ways to a greater understanding of the culture of the Muslim lands. The grantees have come from over thirty countries and their grants have covered academic research, archaeological excavations, architectural conservation, major exhibitions, scholarly publications, surveys and documentation, lectures and conferences, and travel grants. The Barakat Trust has survived on the generosity of its donors, and has achieved much.
